Cuisine

The Třeboň carp as well as other fish, baked or fried, wild game prepared in aristocratic or folk style, smashed potatoes with sour cabbage, creamed dill soup, and the specialty, Doudleby roast pork ringed with dumplings, topped off with sweet sponge cake with stewed blueberries – these are all just a few of the renowned pillars upon which the humble South Bohemia kitchen is based upon. The basis of all these dishes are pure and high quality raw ingredients from the area's hundreds of fishponds, endless forests throughout the border mountains, and the vast pastures. South Bohemia dairy products are known throughout Europe for more than just their high quality. The deep groundwater is succulent to young and old alike, and it makes the area's beer some of the best in the world – and it goes great with the South Bohemia cuisine.

South Bohemia beer trails

Come to taste our excellent South Bohemia beer and typical gastronomy, learn about the traditional brewing of South Bohemia beer in the local breweries, and don't forget to try some of the cultural and historical sweets that our region has to offer. Beer is one of the oldest drinks known to mankind. The Celts drank it with great gusto, the same Celts that settled the area of South Bohemia long before the Slavs and Germans arrived. This happened to be a favourite drink for these newcomer tribes as well. Beer in South Bohemia was always brewed from malt, water and hops, and it could be brewed by nearly anyone, although it was mostly brewed by the aristocracy and the clergy. Many royal towns were founded in the 13th century with various privileges, one of the most important being the right to brew beer. The 18th century saw a court decree terminating the right to brew beer at home, and emphasis began on implementing the most appropriate technological procedures of brewing. A century later, during the age of discoveries and inventions, new breweries were founded with these newly refined brewing procedures. The 20th century then brought further improvements in technology and mechanization, leading to today's automated operation. In present day South Bohemia, there are several renowned, even world famous, breweries, as well as a number of mini-breweries and brewery courts.
