Strakonice Castle

Strakonice Castle

A beautiful, majestic structure sits at the very heart of where the Otava and Volyňka rivers meet – their sharp-angle confluence gives the castle a picture-postcard appearance.

Don’t miss the new exhibitions showcasing five key areas that are typical for the town of Strakonice: textile production, ČZ industrial manufacturing (weapons, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, and the current production program), bagpipe and puppet traditions. In the former commandery of the Knights of Malta, a completely new and unique exhibition in the Czech Republic has been created, focusing on the history and present of the Order in relation to the city’s history. Few know that the Maltese Order resided in Strakonice for nearly 700 years, and the grand priory was based here for three centuries – impacting almost every aspect of life in the town.

In the original southern palace of the castle, with its Renaissance tower "Jelenka", the Museum of the Middle Otava Region houses exhibitions including the largest collection of bagpipes and piping culture in Bohemia.

Between 2005 and 2010, the entire complex underwent a major renovation and was transformed into a true gem on the Otava River. For young visitors, the castle moat is now home to a beloved petting zoo with miniature goats, sheep, ponies, and a donkey.

Exhibitions, lectures, and cultural and social events are held in the historic halls and the courtyard.
