Ruins of Čestice Fortress
The ruins of a former fortress. The village of Čestice is mentioned as early as 1243. The first known owners were the Přech family of Čestice.
The remnants of the fortress lie next to a Baroque chateau, in the village located between Volyně and Vacov in the foothills of the Bohemian Forest (Pošumaví). The exact date of the fortress’s origin is unknown. In 1520, it was burned down due to the raiding expeditions of its then-owner. It was later restored, but gradually fell into disuse after the construction of the château at the end of the 17th century.
Today, the preserved features include cellars of two wings, a raised area in the park, and a section of the enclosing wall with a horseshoe-shaped bastion above the road.
