Countless scenic routes, picturesque nature, and unforgettable experiences await. South Bohemia is crisscrossed with winding roads that meander through forests, ponds, historic towns, and breathtaking landmarks. For five days, Eliška Coufalová – a motorcycle instructor, journalist, and presenter – explored South Bohemia from the seat of her motorcycle. And now, you can too... Where do we recommend heading?
Where to start...
A motorcycle tour through South Bohemia kicks off in the Mladovožicko region. The first stop is the Kovářka Lookout Tower with a blacksmith museum, where you’ll be guided by the blacksmith himself, Mr. Dobeš. From there, continue to the Šelmberk ruins (freely accessible via the red trail), followed by a visit to Mladá Vožice, where we recommend dining at U Zvonice restaurant, and then onto Ústějovská Chapel, a stunning spot for photos.
Next, head toward the Jistebnicko area and the Jistebnická Highlands Nature Park. Along the way, you’ll pass the Baroque Courtyard and the Borotín Castle ruins, Alenina Lhota, Golf Čertovo Břemeno with its restaurant and unique rock formations, Nadějkov with its scenic chapel view, Božetice with the Museum of Milling and Agriculture, and Jistebnice, offering a panoramic view from the chapel of St. Mary Magdalene.
End the first day in Tábor, enjoying a pleasant evening in its romantic streets and cozy cafés. The entire route is mapped out for easy navigation.
South Bohemia is truly a land of castles, and today you’ll see plenty of them!
Start your journey from Tábor with a visit to Brandlín Castle, followed by the picturesque Červená Lhota Castle, famous for its striking red facade and serene setting by the lake.
Next, head to Jindřichův Hradec, where you can explore the State Castle and Chateau with its various guided tours. Don’t miss the House of Tapestries or the Museum of Jindřichův Hradec, home to the famous Krýza Nativity Scene. For a meal, we recommend Bistro Lavendy, a local favorite recommended by Eliška.
Your castle-filled route continues to Český Rudolec, where you’ll find a chateau nicknamed Little Hluboká—for reasons that will become obvious when you see it! Český Rudolec also offers a brewery with a restaurant and accommodations, perfect for a relaxing end to the day. Alternatively, head to Valtínov, where a new guesthouse awaits.
The journey continues from the Česká Kanada tourist region through Třeboňsko to Novohradsko-Doudlebsko. The first stop is the town of Dačice, known as the birthplace of the first sugar cube, featuring a beautiful chateau and an extensive park. Next, head to Slavonice with its historic Renaissance square and the Slavonice underground.
The route then takes you to Staré Město pod Landštejnem with the ruins of Landštejn Castle and to Nová Bystřice, home to the unique Veteran Car Museum. From there, ride through the Třeboňsko area, passing through Hamr u Chlumu u Třeboně, where you'll find the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, a memorial, and a consecrated cross. Continue through Suchdol nad Lužnicí and České Velenice, a town bordering Austria, separated from the Austrian town of Gmünd by the Lužnice River.
The route ends in Nové Hrady, offering several attractions: the Nové Hrady Castle, the Nové Hrady Chateau (where you can also stay overnight), or the Terčino Valley with its nature trail. For those who enjoy sleeping under the stars, there's even an outdoor shelter available.
Through the Czech borderlands, partly along the route of the
Today's route will take you to beautiful places where we recommend making at least a short stop.
In Horní Stropnice, you’ll find the Church of St. Nicholas, the only Romanesque ecclesiastical structure from around 1185 preserved south of České Budějovice. In Dobrá Voda, visit the Church of Our Lady of Consolation and draw water from the miraculous spring, enjoying a unique view of the surrounding landscape. From Hojná Voda, you can take a hike to the Kraví Hora lookout tower and stop by the Bell of Encounters (Zvon Setkávání).
Next, head to the former glassmaking settlement of Pohoří na Šumavě. Passing through Malonty, you’ll reach Cetviny, a place with an incredible atmosphere. Once a bustling market town with 120 houses and over 500 residents, it is now remembered through a restored church and a deteriorating building of the former border guard.
We also recommend stopping at Tvrz Tichá, featuring the southernmost castle lookout tower in the Czech Republic. In the village of Svatý Kámen, visit the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, which carries an interesting historical story.
From there, continue to the Pořešín Castle ruins, which house an exhibition of castle history, and finally make your way to Svachova Lhotka, offering a restaurant, accommodation, wellness, a chocolatier, a distillery, and a brewery.
In the footsteps of the horse-drawn railway and more.
The final motorcycle trip is here, and we’re staying in the Novohradsko-Doudlebsko tourist region.
The first stop is Bujanov, home to the Horse-Drawn Railway Museum. Located in a former guardhouse, this museum offers insights into the history of this unique technical monument, the first of its kind on the European continent.
Along the route, you’ll encounter the Louzek Castle ruins, Hradiště with an optional climb to the Hradišťský Hill lookout tower, or you can park at Mlýn U Dubu and hike to the Sokolčí Castle ruins.
In Besednice, you’ll find the Slabošovka lookout tower. Svatý Jan nad Malší features a Puppet Museum with a permanent exhibition about the village, while in Velešín, you can explore the horse-drawn railway through augmented reality or visit the Velešín Castle ruins.
If you have time to spare, we recommend a stop in Český Krumlov to enjoy its charming streets.
