South Bohemia through French Eyes

Looking for a trip idea that combines medieval castles, fairy-tale chateaux, historic towns, and South Bohemia’s beautiful nature—all in just a few days? Here’s an easy-to-follow route that shows off the region’s signature variety at a relaxed pace.

This is exactly how French influencer Florian Olbrechts @butnomatter.theroadislife travelled—spending four days in South Bohemia and sampling some of its most iconic highlights. You can watch his journey here

Below is the full route, day by day.

Day 1 - Zvíkov Castle & Písek

Start at Zvíkov Castle, perched on a rocky cliff above the meeting point of the Vltava and Otava rivers. The moment you arrive, you’ll feel the medieval vibe—and the views are worth the visit on their own.
Then head to Písek, one of the oldest towns in South Bohemia. Wander through the old town and finish the day with a relaxed walk along the Otava River promenade.

Day 2 - České Budějovice & Hluboká nad Vltavou

Spend the morning in České Budějovice, the heart of South Bohemia. Take an easy stroll around Přemysl Otakar II Square, then explore the surrounding streets and stop for a coffee or a bite to eat.
Next, it’s a short drive to Hluboká nad Vltavou—a quick look around the town, followed by the main attraction: Hluboká Chateau. With its romantic look and beautifully kept park, it’s a place you’ll want to explore slowly.

Day 3 - Český Krumlov (UNESCO)

Save day three for Český Krumlov (UNESCO), South Bohemia’s most famous postcard town. The best way to enjoy it is simply to wander—through winding lanes, quiet corners, and viewpoints that open up over the rooftops.
After you’ve explored on foot, take a raft ride on the Vltava River right past the historic centre. Seeing Krumlov from the water is calmer, slower, and gives you a completely different perspective.

Day 4 - Lipno nad Vltavou

Finish at Lipno nad Vltavou, a lakeside area known for nature, water, and big views. Don’t miss the Treetop Walkway, an easy walk high above the forest with wide panoramas of the Šumava landscape.
For your final stop, head to Lipno Pier—the longest lake pier in Central Europe—for a simple walk out over the water and a great ending to the trip.
