Folk Baroque – Zbudov Marshlands
The main region where you can find several village reserves showcasing the architecture of South Bohemian folk baroque.
The Blata is a historic area of particular importance due to its architecture, as it forms the center of the so-called South Bohemian Folk Baroque. The "Blata villages" in the broader sense are situated in the Budějovice Basin, between the towns of Hluboká nad Vltavou, Vodňany, and the northern slopes of the Blanský Forest. The symbolic heart of the Blata region includes the villages of Plástovice, Sedlec, Zbudov, Malé Chrášťany, Mahouč, Česká Lhota, Mydlovary, and Pištín – historically referred to as the Zbudov Marshlands (Zbudovská blata). In a broader definition of Blata, this also includes Bavorovice, České Vrbné, and Opatovice on the banks of the Vltava near the regional capital, as well as villages in the Blanský Forest foothills, especially Záboří, Dobčice, Strýčice, and above all Holašovice.
The character of individual farmsteads in the villages varies somewhat, influenced primarily by the size of the region and differences in historical development. Architecture lovers will appreciate the interesting gable decorations, expressive symbolism, and volutes. Nature lovers can enjoy the South Bohemian countryside, beautifully portrayed in Karel Klostermann’s novel Mists over the Marshlands (Mlhy na Blatech).
The landscape of the Zbudov Marshlands is flat and connected by a network of cycling routes – ideal terrain for families with children. Along the way, you can even take a swim in one of the nearby ponds. Discover the beauty of the Zbudov Marshlands by bike!
