Rožmberk Pond

Also known as the “Czech Sea,” it is the largest preserved pond in the Czech Republic. Rožmberk Pond is located 2 km north of the town of Třeboň. Its construction marked the culmination of the Golden Age of Czech pond-building at the end of the 16th century. Rožmberk Pond is essentially a reservoir built on the Lužnice River; below its main sluice, the original natural flow of the Lužnice continues.

As the largest pond in the Czech Republic, Rožmberk was completed in 1590 under the direction of Jakub Krčín, who also built the New River (Nová řeka) as protection against floods from the Lužnice. The pond is a masterpiece of Renaissance water management, featuring a dam more than 2 km long and advanced technical elements such as the main sluice, the secondary sluice Adolfka, and a unique small hydroelectric plant from 1922. The Rožmberk Watchtower with its Renaissance sgraffito façade recalls the site’s history, as does the stone monument of the poacher near the Samice sluice.

A nature cycling trail with eight informational panels runs around the pond, guiding visitors through its rich history and natural beauty.
