Cistercian Monastery in Vyšší Brod
It is the only functioning male Cistercian monastery in the Czech Republic.
The Cistercian Monastery in Vyšší Brod is one of the most beautiful and authentically preserved monasteries in the Czech lands. It was founded in 1259 by the Rosenbergs, and its construction took 100 years. Although it remains a functioning monastery, it is no longer exclusively for monks living according to the Rule of Saint Benedict. Visitors can explore the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the monastic choir, the main altar, several chapels, and the philosophical and theological halls. Guided tours include the monastery church, the monastic choir, the main altar, St. Benedict’s Chapel, St. Bernard’s Chapel, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, a sculpture gallery, an art gallery, and the library corridor. The most valuable treasures are the Vyšší Brod Madonna and the Záviš Cross. Part of the monastery also houses a postal museum.
