Schwarzenberg Navigation Canal

Schwarzenberg Navigation Canal

The Schwarzenberg Navigation Canal is a waterway in the Šumava region, connecting a tributary of the Cold Vltava with the Austrian river Große Mühl. It has been part of the Šumava landscape for over 300 years. It is a popular destination for hiking and cycling trips, even for families with small children.

It was built at the request of Prince Johann Nepomuk I of Schwarzenberg, under the supervision of Josef Rosenauer. The total length of the canal is 44 km, and near the settlement of Jelení, it passes through a tunnel approximately 400 m long.

Several hiking and cycling trails run along the Schwarzenberg Canal, including the oldest hiking trail in the Šumava region – the Bear Trail.
