Pohoří na Šumavě and the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel

Pohoří na Šumavě is an ideal starting point for visiting the highest Czech peaks of the Novohradské Mountains – Kamenec and Myslivna.

The name may be a bit misleading, as this settlement is not located in the Šumava (Bohemian Forest) but in the Novohradské Mountains, about one kilometer from the Austrian border. The once-thriving town, home to more than 1,300 people at the end of the 19th century, saw its history disrupted after World War II by political events and the construction of the so-called Iron Curtain.

A silent witness to both the turbulent past and the hopeful present of this place is the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel. As the village was abandoned, the church gradually fell into ruin, partially collapsing in the 1990s. Thanks to the significant efforts of those who cared about the fate of Pohoří na Šumavě, the church has slowly risen from the ashes. Today, it serves as a venue for various cultural, social, and, of course, religious activities.

Pohoří na Šumavě is now not only a great starting point for exploring the highest Czech peaks of the Novohradské Mountains, but also for visiting the Czech source of the Lužnice River and discovering the remains of long-lost glassworks in the surrounding forests.
