Puppet Museum Svatý Jan nad Malší

The Puppet Museum and the permanent exhibition of the village are located on the first floor of the local inn, which can be found in the village square.

Similar to Besednice, the neighboring Svatý Jan nad Malší has its own museum, commemorating the village’s interesting events and unique characteristics. The exhibition is on the first floor of the inn and is open on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Compared to the surrounding villages of Soběnov and Besednice, Svatý Jan nad Malší is a much younger settlement. However, despite its shorter history, it stands out in the landscape that surrounds it.

The village is located about 10 km north of Kaplice and 5 km east of Velešín. Until the early 18th century, the area where the village now stands was nothing more than a barren hill called Ločenická hora. In 1732, the priest of Velešín, Riezenschopfer, reportedly saw five glowing stars appear at this site. He interpreted it as a sign from Saint John of Nepomuk and ordered the construction of a chapel dedicated to the saint. The chapel was consecrated in 1735 and gradually became a popular pilgrimage site, around which people began to settle.

However, visiting Svatý Jan nad Malší is worthwhile regardless of religious traditions. In addition to the breathtaking panoramic views, visitors can admire the green village square, which earned the village 2nd place in the European ENTENTE FLORALE competition.
