New Town Hall in Prachatice
Read the city’s history through the sgraffito on the New Town Hall in Prachatice.
The New Town Hall in Prachatice, built in neo-Renaissance style, dates from 1903 and stands on the site of the original Meerwld House on the Great Square.
A close look reveals images of human activities and professions beneath the main cornice – symbolizing science, crafts, clergy, justice, military, agriculture, and arts. A long sgraffito beneath the windows shows a caravan traveling from Passau to Prachatice along the Golden Path. In the decorative gable is a statue of the patron saint of Prachatice, while other statues depict a merchant and a landsknecht (mercenary). Beneath the tower clock is an important scene showing the presentation of privileges to the city by the messengers of King Wenceslas IV in 1382.
