Additional information
The new ethnographic exhibition "Life in Blata and Kozácko" was ceremoniously opened in 2017. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to the traditional life in the Soběslav-Veselí Blata region and the northern Kozácko area. The exhibition is housed in ten halls of the renovated Smrček House, making it the largest and most comprehensive ethnographic exhibition in South Bohemia. The entire building is wheelchair accessible.
Come and see Blaťačky (women in traditional Blata folk costumes) on a village square and step into a 19th-century farmhouse room from the Blata region! You will learn about Blata and Kozácko folk costumes, their components, other folk art expressions, traditional rural architecture, agriculture, and crafts. The exhibition also covers the peat industry, which was once essential in the region. A special emphasis is placed on authentic exhibits selected from the museum’s rich collections.
The exhibition also highlights the contemporary work of South Bohemian artisans who hold the title "Bearers of Folk Craft Traditions". Their products can be purchased in the museum shop.
A part of the exhibition features a video presentation of the original museum film "A Year in Blata," showcasing local customs throughout the year with narration, images, and music. A documentary by the National Institute of Folk Culture presents traditional Blata and Kozácko dances, while children can enjoy animated folk tales from the Czech TV series "Chaloupka na vršku" (Little House on the Hill). Additionally, there is a unique interactive children's playroom where kids can learn about folk culture in a fun way – or even relax on a traditional clay stove.
The Smrček House also features a special art exhibition called "The Landscape of Táborsko in Fine Arts."
