Hněvkovice Waterworks
Hněvkovice, along with the Kořensko waterworks, forms the newest stage of the Vltava Cascade.
The Hněvkovice dam complex – including the reservoir, dam, tailrace and modified riverbed – was built on the Vltava River between 1980 and 2010.
It is located 5 km south of Týn nad Vltavou and 29 km north of České Budějovice. Together with Kořensko, it was constructed from 1986 to 1991 as the latest stage of the Vltava Cascade. Plans for a structure at Hněvkovice date back to just after World War I, but only after the decision to build the Temelín nuclear power plant did the need arise for a technological water supply via a reservoir on the Vltava.
The structure features a concrete gravity dam with three gated spillways. The dam crown is 191 meters long and 23.5 meters high. A public road crosses the dam crest. On the right bank is a navigation lock for vessels up to 300 tons. On the left bank, there is a hydroelectric power plant with two Kaplan turbines. Simultaneously, a pumping station and water pipeline were built to supply Temelín NPP, which is the reservoir’s primary purpose. The 18.65 km long reservoir extends upstream to the weir in Hluboká nad Vltavou and covers an area of 276.67 hectares.
