Around the World in Vitorazsko
You don’t need to fly to travel the world – just head to Suchdol nad Lužnicí. In the area, you’ll find places called Venice, Mexico, America, Big and Little London, Bosnia, New York, and Paris.
Just a few kilometers apart are settlements with names like Paris, London, or New York. This is no joke, but real Czech hamlets in the Vitorazsko region, located along the upper Lužnice River near the Austrian border.
History of the Region
Vitorazsko used to be part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, but some of its territory was given to Austria. After World War I, in 1919, it was returned to Czechoslovakia via the Treaty of Saint-Germain. Local Czechs named their settlements after world cities to thank the Allied powers that helped create the republic.
A journey “around the world”
The best starting point for discovering this curiosity is Suchdol nad Lužnicí. From there, you can take a walking or cycling route that lets you go “around the world” in just one hour by bike or three on foot.
