Birthplace of Adalbert Stifter
A historic house from the 17th century, which is the birthplace of the famous Bohemian Forest writer Adalbert Stifter.
This 17th-century historic house is the birthplace of the renowned Bohemian Forest writer Adalbert Stifter. The Stifter family lived in this house from around 1660. The owners ran a small farm but mainly made a living as weavers, linen merchants, and yarn traders. Adalbert Stifter was the first member of the seventh generation. He spent a harmonious childhood in this house, and his happy memories often surfaced in his later literary works. After his father’s death, Adalbert left his birthplace to pursue his studies but never forgot his home and the Bohemian Forest.
The house remained in the family’s possession until the end of 1904. In 1910, it was purchased by the municipality of Horní Planá. After a fire in 1934, reconstruction began, and in 1956, preparations started to establish a memorial museum. Over the years, the exhibition has been expanded and changed several times. The current bilingual exhibition “Adalbert Stifter and His Homeland” was created in 2005. Through documents, photographs, and numerous quotations, it introduces visitors to the history of the house, the town of Horní Planá, and notable places in the region. The biographical section focuses on Stifter’s family, close individuals, and events that significantly influenced his personality and work. The museum also hosts seasonal exhibitions and cultural events.
