Kleť Observatory

The Kleť Observatory, situated at an altitude of 1,070 meters, is the highest observatory in the Czech Republic. Among observatories focused on near-Earth asteroids, Kleť ranks among the world’s best.

It is located just south of the summit of Kleť mountain, at 1,070 meters above sea level, making it the highest astronomical observatory in the country. It is well-known both domestically and internationally for its research on asteroids and comets. The International Astronomical Union has confirmed 327 asteroids discovered at Kleť with reliably calculated orbits, placing the observatory sixth in the world ranking. One of Kleť’s discoveries is named after the city of Český Krumlov – it is asteroid number 2747, with a diameter of nearly 20 kilometers, orbiting the Sun every 5.48 years.

How to get there

The observatory is located south of the summit of Kleť, the highest peak of the Blanský Forest, approximately 30 km southwest of České Budějovice, near Český Krumlov. The most convenient access is via the Krásetín–Kleť chairlift.
