Church of St. James the Greater in Prachatice
The oldest document about the existence of the church dates back to 1359. The church was built gradually, first the presbytery in the second half of the 14th century, after 1410 the construction of the triple nave began, which was interrupted by the Hussite wars, followed by the side chapel of the Holy Cross around 1411, then the construction of two towers in the facade, and only in the late Gothic period was the triple nave completed at the end of the 15th century.
Location:
The interior decoration of the church consists of sumptuous stonework and wooden Gothic reliefs that decorate the early Baroque high altar. Its centre is formed by Baroque statues of St Mary, St Dominic and St Catherine of Siena by F. Rambler from the early 18th century. The pulpit from the 18th century is also of historical interest. In the right aisle is the Gothic entrance to the Chapel of St. John N. Neumann, where there are parts of murals with biblical motifs. In a narrow alley along the south side of the church there is a sgraffito painting of the Lord's Supper from 1563 on the wall of house No. 31, which, although not a decoration of the church itself, is of great cultural and historical value.
