Additional information

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, also known as Stožecká Chapel, is a wooden pilgrimage chapel located at an altitude of 950 meters. It was built in 1791 by Jakoubek Klauser, a blacksmith from Volary, as an expression of gratitude for his miraculous recovery of eyesight. The chapel stands over a spring with healing water, which, according to legend, has miraculous healing effects.

Due to the healing properties of the spring, the chapel was a popular pilgrimage site for people from both Bohemia and nearby Bavaria. On the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15, 1920, over 5,600 people gathered here for the religious service. The main pilgrimage always takes place on the first Sunday after August 14.
