Additional information
Don't miss the new exhibitions that present five major themes typical for the town of Strakonice: textile production, industrial manufacturing by ČZ (weapons, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, current production), bagpipe and puppet traditions. In the former commandery of the Order of Malta, a completely new and unique exhibition in the Czech Republic has been created, dedicated to the history and present of the order and its link to the town's history. Few people know today that the Order of Malta resided in Strakonice for nearly 700 years, with the Grand Priory headquartered here for three centuries, influencing nearly every aspect of life in the town.
In the original southern palace of the castle with its Renaissance tower “Jelenka,” the Museum of the Central Otava Region Strakonice hosts exhibitions, including the largest exposition of bagpipes and bagpiping in Bohemia.
The entire complex underwent extensive reconstruction between 2005–2010 and has become a true gem on the Otava River. A favorite for young visitors is the castle safari in the moat, featuring miniature goats, sheep, ponies, and a donkey.
Exhibitions, lectures, cultural and social events are held in the historic halls and courtyard.
