Birth House of Adalbert Stifter

Birth House of Adalbert Stifter

A historical 17th-century house, which is the birthplace of the famous Bohemian Forest writer Adalbert Stifter.

The Stifter family lived in this house from around 1660. Its owners farmed the land but primarily earned their living as weavers, linen workers, and traders in flax and yarn. Adalbert Stifter was the first member of the seventh generation. He spent a harmonious childhood in the house, and his happy memories are often reflected in his later literary works. After his father's death, Adalbert left the family home to study but never forgot his home or the Bohemian Forest. Until the end of 1904, the house remained in the possession of the Stifter family, and in 1910 it was purchased by the town of Horní Planá. Shortly after a fire in 1934, reconstruction began, and in 1956 preparations started to establish a museum memorial. Over the years, the memorial exhibition was expanded and changed several times. The current bilingual exhibition "Adalbert Stifter and His Homeland" was created in 2005. Visitors are introduced through documents, photographs, and numerous quotes to the history of the birth house, the town of Horní Planá, and the memorial sites in the surrounding area. The biographical part focuses on the Stifter family, close individuals, and events that significantly influenced his personality and work. The museum also hosts seasonal exhibitions and various cultural events.
