Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Nové Hrady
This parish and monastery church is located near the southeast corner of the square on Husova Street.
The church is connected to the Monastery of Divine Mercy (formerly the Servite Monastery).
The parish church was first mentioned in 1284. The original early Gothic building was destroyed by the Hussites in 1425 and again by fire in 1467 caused by the army of Zdeněk of Sternberg. A complete reconstruction followed, with the rough structure finished around 1590. The saddle portals on the west and south sides and the Swabian net vault in the presbytery date from this time – the finest in South Bohemia. This first phase ranks among the masterpieces of the late Gothic Rožmberk workshop. In 1607, lightning struck the tower, which was then raised with a Renaissance story. In 1726, the damaged roof was replaced with an octagonal Baroque dome with a lantern – the last major exterior change.
Inside, early Baroque furnishings from the third quarter of the 17th century are preserved. The main altar from 1678 originally housed an image of the Záblatí Virgin Mary, saved by Karl Bonaventura Buquoy in 1619 from a burning house during the Battle of Záblatí. This engraving became a pilgrimage object. A red marble slab marks the Buquoy family crypt in the presbytery, and the nave holds the Servite monks’ crypt from 1748.
