Slavic Hillfort Branišovice

Slavic Hillfort Branišovice

One part of the municipality of Římov is the settlement of Branišovice, near which lies one of the oldest South Bohemian Slavic hillforts. In its time (8th to 9th century), it served as an important strategic and guard post.

The hillfort was located on a promontory high above the valley of the Malše River. Its area was bounded by steep slopes both towards the Malše River and into the narrow canyon of the Branišovice Stream. Remains of the hillfort are still visible in the terrain today. For example, you can distinguish the remnants of three ramparts separating the first and second forecourts and the acropolis.
