Krčín’s Fortress

Krčín’s Fortress

A monument to the famous pond engineer Jakub Krčín.

Krčín’s fortress was built in the village of Křepenice by Jakub Krčín, a renowned pond builder who was granted the Sedlčany estate for his service to the Rosenbergs. Today, the remaining structures include the wall, two gates, three bastion-like corner towers, and a central palace with remnants of original wall paintings featuring mythical themes.

Krčín bought the village of Křepenice in 1580, and the Renaissance-style water fortress was reportedly also used for alchemical practices. A long bridge leads to the site, which previously featured a drawbridge.

The site is currently privately owned and can be visited by arrangement with the owners. Thanks to the new proprietors, reconstruction is underway and a Krčín Museum is planned.

Do you know that...

The property was surrounded by a pond named Návesník, and access was provided by a stone bridge.
