System of Seven Fountains in Hořice na Šumavě
Historical water supply system of the town.
The town’s water supply relied on a system of seven fountains fed by wells above Hořice. In the 18th century, a statue of St. John of Nepomuk was erected by one of the fountains.
Hořice is supplied from three wells above the town, from which a distribution system was built to supply the fountains in the square. Their number gradually increased to seven. The system is cleverly designed – especially for fire emergencies, when the content of a small pond on the Hořice Stream can be diverted into the water system and water drawn from the fountains.
