Volary Menhirs

Volary Menhirs

Thousand-year-old stones radiating Celtic energy.

If you follow the educational trail from Volary toward Zelené Dvory, you will soon reach the beautiful hill “U Dvou líp” with 11 menhirs just beyond the village.

Although erected here in April 2007, their estimated age is several thousand years. They originally stood on a nameless plateau in the Ore Mountains as remnants of a prehistoric circular structure (rondel), which had to be removed due to road construction. Geologist and chemist Ing. Pavel Polák played a key role in saving and relocating them to this spot above Volary.

The 11 menhirs are arranged again into a rondel, designed partly as a sanctuary and partly as an observatory. The tallest, called the "visior stela," stands in the center. The other stones are set into two intersecting pentagrams – not placed randomly or evenly, but according to the position of the sun during the summer and winter solstices.
