Church of Saint Martin in Chelčice
Originally Romanesque, now in Baroque attire.
The Church, originally late Romanesque from around 1240, was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, when the nave was vaulted. Between 1728–30, side chapels were added. The Baroque concept – to extend the illusion of grandeur through ceiling paintings and a painted chancel with apse – creates a very pleasing overall impression. Most of the furnishings date from the second half of the 18th century, with several gravestones from the 16th–19th centuries. The original Romanesque portal is preserved on the southern side. The bell dedicated to the Virgin Mary was cast by bellmaker Silvius Kreuz in České Budějovice in 1704.
