Červené Blato Nature Trail
The Červené Blato Nature Reserve is located on the southwestern edge of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and is one of the largest peat bogs in South Bohemia. In some places, the peat layer reaches a depth of up to 8 meters.
Since 1774, peat was extracted here for a nearby glassworks. In the 20th century, peat mining ceased, and the areas affected by extraction have regenerated well. Visitors can explore a rich mosaic of peatland habitats, ranging from open spaces to primeval forest, with remarkable flora and fauna. The rare peat pine (Pinus rotundata) thrives here, along with downy and silver birch, alder buckthorn, Labrador tea, and cottongrass. The bog pine forests are home mainly to invertebrates. Butterflies are abundant, and the extensive forests provide shelter for many bird species. A 4 km long educational trail of the same name leads through the peat bog, mainly along forest paths and attractive wooden boardwalks.
