Ruins of Zvěřinec Castle
Zvěřinec Castle is a place tied to Master Jan Hus, the poet Karel Hynek Mácha, and mystical legends. Although little of the structure remains today, it has gathered many stories and mysteries from other sources.
How to get there
You can reach it on foot via the red tourist trail – 1 km from Zadní Boudy or 2 km from Matějov.
Additional information
The castle has stood in the hilly countryside south of Jesenice since the 14th century.
Its name likely comes from the nearby hill and forest, once used as a game reserve. The details of its origin and the reason or date of its demise remain unknown. Perhaps it was destroyed in war – or perhaps the reason was far simpler. What local "evidence" suggests that Master Jan Hus preached here, and what drew the young Karel Hynek Mácha to the ruins? You’ll learn it all along the educational trail from Zadní Boudy.
The edge of the Jistebnická Highlands Nature Park reaches all the way to the ruins, so you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscape. If you enjoy a touch of mysticism, the remnants of the watchtower will surely draw you in. It's said to radiate positive energy, just like several menhirs along the trail. And from time to time, strange things are said to happen here…
