Ruins of Vrškamýk Castle

Ruins of Vrškamýk Castle

This is a former royal castle. According to legend, a cruel knight named Hunec treated his subjects poorly. One day, while riding through the forest, he was killed. His ghost is said to still wander the region.

The castle was built during the reign of the most powerful Přemyslid kings. The work begun by King Wenceslas I was completed by his son Přemysl Otakar II. Under his rule, the castle served as the administrative center for the region west of the Vltava, housing a royal official.

The castle was last inhabited during the reign of Charles IV. After the grander Karlštejn was built, the estate was absorbed under its authority, and Vrškamýk was abandoned.

Today, parts of the castle’s perimeter walls remain. Thanks to the “Kamýk nad Vltavou – A Journey into the Middle Ages” project, you can now step back in time. Information panels guide you through the castle’s history, and a scenic tower accessible via a path from the ruins offers new views of the landscape.
