František Bílek’s House in Chýnov
Modestly called the “Cottage” by its author, in truth it is a masterpiece by the foremost figure of Czech Symbolism. Bílek’s house in Chýnov was built in 1898 based on the artist’s own designs, with the need for a spacious, light-filled studio as a top priority.
Like Bílek’s villa in Prague, the Chýnov house is freely embedded in a natural environment. Its walls are made of raw brick combined with wood. The facade features a range of symbolic reliefs complemented by Bílek’s mystical inscriptions.
Since 1990, the house has been owned by the Prague City Gallery. In Chýnov, visitors can also see the local cemetery, where František Bílek is buried beneath his monumental five-meter sculpture Prayer over the Graves (1905). The cemetery also includes five additional gravestones created by Bílek between 1902–1918. A special guidebook, František Bílek / House in Chýnov, is available for purchase at the museum and at Prague’s Troja Château.
