Husinec Dam

Husinec Dam

The Husinec water reservoir is a dam located near the town of the same name in the Prachatice district.

The primary purpose of its construction was to protect Husinec and surrounding villages from flooding. The lake formed behind the dam has been capturing high water, especially during spring snowmelt, since its completion in 1939. Over time, the dam’s use expanded. The reservoir now serves as a source of drinking water for the district town of Prachatice. Between 1950 and 1954, a small hydroelectric power plant was built below the dam, equipped with a single Kaplan turbine with an installed capacity of 0.5 MW. The stone dam is 34 meters high and 196.5 meters long at the top. A road crosses the dam along its 5-meter-wide crown, 25 meters above the lake’s surface.

The lake created behind the dam covers an area of 68 hectares and holds 6.53 million cubic meters of water. The dam was constructed from stone quarried at the nearby large quarry on Kobylí Hora near Prachatice. The stone was transported by cableway across the valley. A road from Prachatice to Husinec crosses the dam. The red hiking trail from Prachatice (about 5 km) to Husinec (about 3 km) also runs here. A yellow hiking trail follows along the reservoir from the dam and continues through the valley of the Blanice River to Křišťanovický Pond near the ruins of Hus Castle.
