Příběnice Castle Ruins

Příběnice Castle Ruins

The ruins of what was once the most powerful Vítkovec castle guard the deep gorge of the Lužnice River.

As with many historic sites, this one is shrouded in legends. They often speak of a mysterious large black dog. If you come across him on a trip to Příběnice, don’t be afraid – he’s guarding a local treasure.

Příběnice and Příběničky are remnants of two 13th-century Rosenberg castles hidden in the forests on opposite banks of the Lužnice River. What remains of Příběnice includes part of an octagonal tower and the ruins of main buildings. Castles become ruins for many reasons – fires, battles, abandonment… But Příběnice and Příběničky were destroyed by agreement!

In 1420, Příběnice was conquered by the Hussites, and a few years later, after peace was made between the Taborites and Emperor Sigismund, the Rosenbergs and the Hussites struck a deal under which both castles were demolished.
