Lipno Reservoir

Lipno Reservoir

Lipno Reservoir is the largest artificial lake in the Czech Republic and an ideal holiday destination—even in winter.

Skating on the frozen Lipno lake is one of the most popular winter activities, attracting thousands of visitors from across the Czech Republic and abroad. The lake typically freezes from December to March. Once the ice reaches a safe thickness of about 18 cm, a regularly maintained skating trail is created between Lipno nad Vltavou and Frymburk, measuring nearly 11 km. The Horní Planá route is 15 km. Combined, these create a record-setting trail of 38 km to Pernek (this longer section is not maintained regularly).

Ten Rules for Safe Ice Travel

  • Do not step on ice unless you're sure it will hold your weight.
  • Never walk on ice thinner than 10 cm.
  • Avoid moving in groups—keep about 3 meters apart.
  • Be extremely cautious; stop immediately if you hear cracking.
  • Use a rope or available tools for safety.
  • In case of emergency, call rescue services: 112, 150, or 155.
  • When rescuing, secure yourself with a rope and spread your weight.
  • Use ice picks—they help even on wet ice.
  • Avoid inlets, outlets, under bridges, or anywhere ice may be thinner.
  • If a person is conscious after rescue, remove wet clothes, dress them in dry ones, keep them warm, and wait for paramedics.
