Town of Husinec
Husinec is a town in the South Bohemian Region, approximately 4.5 km north-northwest of Prachatice.
The first written mention of the settlement dates back to 1291. A second mention comes from 1359, concerning the promotion of the settlement to the town of Husinec. That same year, a record also refers to the unfortified town of Hussenicz (German: Husinec). Ten years later (1369), Jan Hus was allegedly born here.
In the 14th century, Hus Castle near Záblatí was founded (its ruins lie about a 3-hour walk from Husinec). Husinec, along with several surrounding villages, came under the administration of this newly formed feudal estate. In 1390, the Hus Castle passed into the hands of Sigmund Huller of Orlík, who was later executed for forgery, and the castle (together with Orlík Castle) was inherited by his brother Ondřej Huller. According to some sources, Ondřej sold the castle to knight Mikuláš of Husinec. Mikuláš died on December 24, 1420, after falling from a horse. The abandoned castle was seized by Habart of Hrádek. Angered nobles from Prachatice burned the castle on September 8, 1441, and demolished the charred remains. In 1455, knight Smílek of Lnáře sold the Hus estate to Oldřich of Rosenberg. It was then joined to the Winterberg estate.
The town has approximately 1,400 inhabitants. Since 2003, its historical center has been a municipal heritage zone. Above the town, on the Blanice River, lies the Husinec reservoir. On April 12, 2007, the municipality was officially granted town status again.
