Jewish Cemetery of Radomyšl

Jewish Cemetery of Radomyšl

In the forest near the Church of St. John the Baptist lies a hidden Jewish cemetery.

The Jewish cemetery of Radomyšl is located far from the village, in a wooded area, and is actually closer to the village of Osek. The best access from Radomyšl is via the Church of St. John the Baptist above the village. The path continues through an alley into the forest. The cemetery was probably established before the year 1838, and the last burial took place in 1905. It covers an area of 413 m², is enclosed by a stone wall, and is nearly full, with approximately 50 tombstones dating from the first half of the 19th century. The grandparents of writer Franz Kafka – Jakub Kafka and his wife – are buried here. The cemetery is freely accessible. In the village of Osek there used to be a synagogue, reportedly built in 1817, which was demolished in 1980.
