Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Dobrá Voda

This pilgrimage church is a significant Baroque masterpiece by K. I. Dientzenhofer. With its design, it is a gem among Baroque buildings in South Bohemia.

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is located on the summit of the village of Dobrá Voda near České Budějovice. It is one of the most important Baroque monuments in the region and in all of South Bohemia. The work of the renowned artists Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and Václav Vavřinec Reiner features an oval nave, a concavely curved western façade with a prism-shaped tower, a rectangular presbytery, and two shallow side chapels. The main nave is covered by an interesting bell-shaped dome. The church interior boasts rich decoration. The frescoes are primarily biblical in theme.

Construction of the church began with the laying of the foundation stone on July 12, 1733, after a year of negotiations between the České Budějovice magistrate and Master Dientzenhofer. The construction was completed two years later with a budget of 12,483 gulden. Ten years after the start, following finishing works and decorations, the church was consecrated. Today, it serves the Roman Catholic parish based in Dobrá Voda near České Budějovice.
