Žižkova Skalka in Prachatice
Look at Prachatice like famous military commanders.
The distinctive rock formation Skalka is located in the suburban area of Prachatice, about 150 m from the city’s historic fortifications. The steep, heavily fractured quartz ridge is part of a massive quartz vein.
Skalka is the highest point of the historic town center and was once used for military purposes. Interestingly, in November 1420, Jan Žižka of Trocnov commanded his troops from Skalka during the siege of the city. Later, at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War in September 1620, the imperial general Count Buquoy also used Skalka to direct the siege of the town.
In 1989, Skalka was declared a natural monument, covering an area of 0.30 ha at an altitude of 567 – 588 m above sea level. Skalka also serves as the starting point for a 15 km long scenic loop trail around Prachatice.
