Church of St. James the Greater in Prachatice
Discover Prachatice from above.
This late Gothic church is one of the most important and oldest monuments in Prachatice. It is located on Church Square, between the Main Square and the Lower Gate (also known as the Písek Gate). It is closely linked to cosmic spiritual energy and is said to radiate above-average energy. To the left of the presbytery, residual negative energy remains from the burning of townspeople by the Hussites in 1420. The church gained its current appearance in the 19th century when the tower was rebuilt in the shape of a minaret after a fire in 1832.
The church is dedicated to St. James the Greater, patron of merchants, traders, pilgrims, burden-carriers, and orphans. Its construction was tied to the founding of a new trade route on the famous Golden Trail that passed through Prachatice.
At the top of the church is a viewing tower, open to visitors each year from June 1 to September 30. To enjoy the breathtaking views 40 meters above the cobblestone streets of the heritage zone, you must climb 157 steps.
