Sudslavice Linden Tree
Discover a South Bohemian giant.
The Sudslavice linden tree is often referred to as Hus’s Linden, as it is said that Master Jan Hus himself used to preach beneath it. However, with an estimated age of 600 years, it is more likely that Master Jan Hus could have at most planted the tree himself. Today, the linden reaches a height of 30 meters and its trunk circumference is nearly 12 meters. Alongside the Chlístov Linden, it is one of the two mightiest linden trees in South Bohemia. The tree was last treated in 2011. Strong branches in the crown are supported by ropes, and a small roof covers the hollow left by a broken branch. Regular gatherings of accordion players are held under the tree. Mr. Vanický, the owner of the mill located next to the linden, will surely be happy to show tourists the old milling equipment.
The Sudslavice linden can also be considered the starting point of the educational trail, which was made accessible as early as 1977. The trail winds its way above the Volyňka River valley near the village of Sudslavice, 5 km south of Čkyně, in the Opolenec Nature Reserve. Information panels are placed directly along the path.
