Grasel’s Cave and Schiller’s Rocks
Rock formations on the Grasel educational trail leading from Slavonice to Český Rudolec.
Along the Grasel educational trail from Slavonice to Český Rudolec, you’ll find a small underground space – more of a modified rock overhang in a low granite block – known as Grasel’s Cave. In the past, it supposedly served as a hideout for the infamous band of robber J. G. Grasel, who operated in the first half of the 19th century on both sides of the Czech-Austrian border. An information panel near the cave explains Grasel’s connection to the area.
Near this "cave" are the so-called Schiller’s Rocks – a cluster of granite boulders resembling a miniature rock town. According to local legend, the famous German writer Friedrich von Schiller used to sit here and, inspired by the nature and the tale of the robber Grasel, wrote his famous work The Robbers. His name is engraved in one of the stones in his memory.
