Fragments of History:

The fortress, as the center of an independent noble estate, was established in Lnáře before the year 1318. It was likely founded by the imperial family von Schlüsselberg, whose speaking coat of arms – “a key diagonally across the field” (German der Schlüssel = key) – was carved above the main entrance and still visible in 1568. At that time, locals referred to the fortress as Klíčumburk (Key Castle).

The first written mention of Lnáře dates to 1318, when Habart of Lnáře, related to the noblemen of nearby Kasejovice, is recorded. His coat of arms featured a black donkey's head on a golden shield. His descendants remained in Lnáře until the early 15th century.
