The Pilgrimage Church of Klokoty stands on a rocky hill on the western edge of the town of Tábor, proudly overlooking its surroundings. It is said that the flowing waters of the picturesque Lužnice River, over whose valley the church rises, gave rise to its name.

The original Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which has stood here since the 13th century, suffered severe damage during the Hussite Wars. Ironically, this destruction paved the way for the construction of the magnificent Baroque pilgrimage church in Klokoty. Inspired, perhaps, by the works of architect Jan Santini Aichel, the church was gradually expanded with arcades and chapels, creating an exceptionally striking complex in the shape of a double cross, comparable to the greatest architectural gems of European Baroque.

The Pilgrimage Church of Klokoty still serves its original purpose today and has also become a popular destination for visitors. A Way of the Cross leads from Kotnov through Holečkovy Gardens to the church.

The church is freely accessible. Guided tours are available on weekends during opening hours or at any other time upon prior telephone arrangement at 603 224 665.
