Příběnice Castle Ruins
The remains of what was once the most powerful castle of the Vítkovci family guard the deep canyon of the Lužnice River.
Like many historical sites, this one is surrounded by legends – one of which tells of a mysterious large black dog. If you meet him on your trip to Příběnice, don’t be afraid – he guards the local treasure.
Příběnice and Příběničky are the remnants of two Rosenberg castles from the 13th century, hidden in the forests on opposite banks of the Lužnice River. From Příběnice, part of an octagonal tower and fragments of the main buildings remain.
Castle ruins are often the result of fire, war, or abandonment – but Příběnice and Příběničky were destroyed by agreement! In 1420, Příběnice was captured by the Hussites. A few years later, after peace was made between the Taborites and Emperor Sigismund, the Rosenbergs and the Hussites agreed to demolish both castles.
The ruins are freely accessible.
