Zbudovská Blata Wetlands

This is the main area where you’ll find several village heritage zones featuring South Bohemian rural Baroque architecture

Blata is a historic region significant particularly for its architecture, as it represents the heart of the so-called rural Baroque style. Broadly speaking, the Blata villages are located in the České Budějovice Basin, between the towns of Hluboká nad Vltavou, Vodňany, and the northern foothills of the Blanský Forest. The symbolic center of the Blata region includes the villages of Plástovice, Sedlec, Zbudov, Malé Chrášťany, Mahouč, Česká Lhota, Mydlovary, and Pištín, historically known as Zbudovská Blata. In a broader sense, this also includes Bavorovice, České Vrbné, and Opatovice near the Vltava River close to the regional capital, and villages at the foot of the Blanský Forest – particularly Záboří, Dobčice, Strýčice, and especially Holašovice.

The character of the farmhouses in each village varies slightly, due to the area’s size and differing historical development. Architecture lovers will appreciate the decorative gables, symbolic motifs, and volutes. Nature lovers will enjoy the South Bohemian countryside, immortalized in the novel Mists over the Moors by Karel Klostermann.

The landscape of the Zbudovská Blata is flat and connected by a network of cycling routes – an ideal terrain for families with children. Along the way, you can even take a swim in one of the nearby ponds. Discover the beauty of Zbudovská Blata by bike!
