Grasel’s Cave and the Schiller Rocks

Grasel’s Cave and the Schiller Rocks

Rock formations on the educational Grasel Trail leading from Slavonice to Český Rudolec.

Along the Grasel educational trail running from Slavonice to Český Rudolec, you will find an underground space – more precisely, a modified overhang in a low granite block – known as Grasel’s Cave. In the past, it allegedly served as a hideout for the robber band led by J. G. Grasel, which operated on both sides of the Czech-Austrian border in the early 19th century. An information panel near the cave explains Grasel’s connection to the area.

Near the “cave” lie the so-called Schiller Rocks – resembling a small rock city made of granite boulders and outcrops. According to legend, the famous German writer Friedrich von Schiller used to sit here, drawing inspiration from the landscape and the tale of the robber Grasel to write his famed drama The Robbers. His name is carved into one of the stones in remembrance.
