Grasel Trails

Grasel Trails

Follow us along the paths where the feared "rascal" Johann Georg Grasel once robbed and hid.

Join us on a journey through places where Johann Georg Grasel – the son of a beggar woman and an executioner – became, already as a youth, the leader of a robber gang feared throughout the region. His legend still lives on in folk songs and tales.

The Grasel Trails span both sides of the Austrian-Czech border, stretching between the Austrian towns of Raabs and Kautzen and the Czech towns of Nová Bystřice and Nové Syrovice. They form seven scenic loops around towns and villages: Raabs (10.5 km), Karlstein (34.5 km), Dobersberg (46 km), Slavonice (23 km), Český Rudolec (9 km), Vratěnín (7 km), Nové Syrovice (10 km), and Nová Bystřice (29 km). One trail crosses the border from Slavonice via Maříž to Dobersberg (22 km).

Step into an untouched and pure landscape of shady forests and historic paths. On the Grasel Trails, you will discover traces of our ancestors, mythical corners, stone fields – possibly ancient Celtic sacred sites. We invite you to explore a region that will enrich you with its hidden natural power.

In Austria, the Grasel Trails are marked with the standard red-white stripe, and in the Czech Republic with a yellow circle bordered by a white "G".

The Grasel Trails Visitor Center is located in the Community House in Slavonice. Open year-round: September – June: Mon–Fri 10 am – 4 pm; July – August: daily 10 am – 6 pm.
