Velký Tisý
The fifth largest pond in the Czech Republic
The Velký Tisý pond was built in 1505 by Štěpánek Netolický and later enlarged by Jakub Krčín. Since 1957, it has been a national nature reserve and is also a significant bird habitat. Velký Tisý is the largest pond of the Velký and Malý Tisý National Nature Reserve and part of one of the largest ornithological reserves in the Czech Republic. This reserve is a typical example of the Třeboň region landscape. It consists of a complex of eleven ponds, wetlands, riparian forests, and marshy meadows, covering an area of 616 ha. Among the bird species that nest in the reserve are the great crested grebe, grey and great white herons, common teal, and the white-tailed eagle, our largest bird of prey.
