From Frymburk by Ferry to Vítkův Hrádek and St. Thomas

The Highest-Located Castle in the Czech Republic

The trail to the top of Vítkův Hrádek castle leads through a beautiful Šumava forest, continuously uphill to an elevation of 1,053 m. First, you must take a ferry from nearby Frymburk across to the opposite shore at Frýdava, then follow either a paved road or forest trail uphill about 6 km to the summit of Vítkův kámen. On the far side of the hill lies the small village of Svatý Tomáš (St. Thomas) at 970 m elevation. The surrounding countryside is charming and rich in protected plant species; in addition to roe and red deer, lynx and even moose can be found here.

After completing the scenic journey to the top – whether on foot, by bike, or by car – you can visit the following: a 13th-century church, a Schwarzenberg hunting lodge from 1860, and – 83 meters above the village – the ruins of the 13th-century Vítkův Hrádek guard castle (the highest-located castle in the Czech Republic), which features a lookout platform. The civic association “Vítkův hrádek” was founded to help preserve and restore the castle. In good weather, there is a magnificent view of the Alps.

At Vítkův Hrádek, there is a refreshment stand with seating. In Svatý Tomáš, you’ll find a cozy inn near the church and a guesthouse offering accommodation.
