Geocaching in the Novohradské and Doudlebské Regions
The horse-drawn railway, once the first of its kind on the European continent, no longer exists today, but the landscape between České Budějovice and Horní Dvořiště still holds traces of it. Our next hiking trail will allow you to discover these remnants and, at the same time, search for three hidden caches along the route.
The ideal starting point is the village of Horní Dvořiště, where you’ll find plenty of parking spots for your car. The route can be completed on foot or by mountain bike. However, using a bike is more difficult on the educational trail section, where you can, of course, leave it parked. The trail mostly follows marked paths, but at some points, it leaves them, so we do not recommend taking a stroller. The full trail is 16.5 km, but if you skip visiting the village of Rybník, it shortens to 12.2 km. It’s not physically demanding and will také around half a day to complete — depending, of course, on how long it takes you to find the three caches. They are hidden at:
- First cache: Hidden in the now-defunct village of Klopanov by the Lučínský Stream. Specifically, you’ll find it within 20 meters of the Lučínský Stream signpost. On the map, this spot is marked with number 2.
- Second cache: The trail leads you to a massive bridge pillar, one of the surviving remnants of the horse-drawn railway. At this bridge pillar, there’s a tourist rest stop and informational panels that are part of the “Koňská dráha” (Horse Railway) educational trail, where you can learn interesting facts about the history of this transport route. But before reading, look around within roughly 25 meters of the rest area — the second cache is hidden here. On the map, it’s marked with number 3.
- Third cache: Hidden on the return journey to Horní Dvořiště, at a trail intersection where there’s a rest area with seating. The cache, marked as number 4 on the map, is located within 20 meters of the seating area.
